Version 3.5 of OfficeWriter Supports SQL Server 2005
and .NET Framework V2.0
Many New Features for Excel and Word
Watertown, MA November 15, 2005 - SoftArtisans has announced that its release
of version 3.5 of OfficeWriter fully supports both Microsoft SQL Server 2005
and Visual Studio 2005. OfficeWriter is a high-powered reporting tool that delivers
native Microsoft Office Excel and Microsoft Office Word over the Web without
the need for Microsoft Office on the server.
Hundreds of customers are already using OfficeWriter with SQL Server Reporting
Services to design and deliver their reports without ever leaving Microsoft
Office. The familiarity of Excel and Word eliminates the need to train business
users on other report design tools.
As a renderer within Reporting Services, OfficeWriter generates Report Definition
Language (RDL) files that preserve every Excel feature, such as pivot tables,
VBA, macros, advanced formulas and live charts, while also adding Word to the
export options within Reporting Services. Currently, Reporting Services supports
only Microsoft Office Web Components, PDF, XML/MHTML and limited Excel output.
“SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services will work with OfficeWriter to utilize
the world’s most recognizable content formats – Microsoft Office Excel and Word
– to provide customers with report management and security features in an easy-to-use
format,” said Don Petersen, Sr. Product Manager, Microsoft SQL Server. “Our
applications work together so customers can design and deliver the Excel and
Word reports they need for business intelligence.”
New OfficeWriter for Reporting Services Features:
- Full SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 support
- New rendering extension for Reporting Services 2005
- Add real Excel and Word to reports designed in Visual Studio 2005
- Render Excel and Word reports from the same RDL file
This new version of OfficeWriter also adds significant Excel and Word functionality,
including document merging, watermarks, R1C1 formula support and conditional
formatting, just to name a few of the new features.

Most Powerful Version of SoftArtisans OfficeWriter
Released at Microsoft TechEd 2005
Additional Support for SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services
Watertown, MA June 6, 2005 – In conjunction with Microsoft Tech•Ed 2005, SoftArtisans
has released version 3 of OfficeWriter, featuring Microsoft .NET application
objects for both Microsoft Office Excel 2003 and Microsoft Office Word 2003
and increased support for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.
With the enterprise edition of OfficeWriter, users can create and modify any
Excel and Word feature at runtime or use the easy template-approach to design
reports. The new version also brings new Application Objects for both Excel
and Word in the Java™ Edition of OfficeWriter and more functionality to
those who are now using OfficeWriter with SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.
“SQL Server 2005 will work with OfficeWriter, so customers can utilize content
formats they already know – Microsoft Office Excel and Word – to author Reporting
Service reports,” said Lucho Torres, Group Product Manager for SQL Server at
Microsoft Corp. “Together, these products help customers gather and deliver
data they need to analyze their organization’s information.”
With the release today of version 3 of OfficeWriter, users can avoid proprietary
design tools that are unfamiliar to most business users who regularly create
reports. Equally as important, companies can continue to use complex legacy
reports, which feature Excel and Word, as they shift to Reporting Services.
When used within Reporting Services, OfficeWriter generates RDL files that preserve
Excel 2003 features and adds Word 2003 to the export options within Reporting
Services.
"Version 3 of OfficeWriter is a significant release for us as we continue to
enhance Reporting Services’ functionality within Microsoft Office 2003, but
also greatly improve the Excel and Word reporting capabilities of Excel 2003
and Word 2003 within our stand-alone product,” said SoftArtisans CEO David Wihl.

SoftArtisans Adds Full Excel and Word Support to Microsoft
SQL Server Reporting Services
Business Users Design Reports Within MS Office
Brookline, MA October 11, 2004 – With the release today of a Reporting Services
Edition of OfficeWriter, SoftArtisans boosts the usability of the Microsoft
reporting tool by providing the ability to design and deliver reports directly
within Microsoft Office. Without SoftArtisans OfficeWriter, Reporting Services
customers must design their reports in Visual Studio .NET.
“OfficeWriter complements SQL Server Reporting Services by providing full-function
Excel and Word output,” said Microsoft SQL Server Senior Product Manager Don
Petersen. “The integration with Microsoft and SoftArtisans allows Reporting
Services to take advantage of the ubiquity of Office as a report writer for
end users.”
SoftArtisans OfficeWriter enables the design, publishing and delivery of reports
directly from Microsoft Excel and Word using SQL Server Reporting Services,
ASP.NET or Java™. With OfficeWriter, end users can avoid design tools
like VS.NET that are unfamiliar to most business users. Equally as important,
companies can continue to use complex legacy reports, which feature Excel and
Word, as they shift to Reporting Services.
This special edition of OfficeWriter generates Reporting Services reports (RDL
files), but unlike Reporting Services’ Excel output, all Excel features, such
as pivot tables, VBA, macros, advanced formulas and live charts, are preserved
by OfficeWriter. Reporting Services currently supports only Microsoft Office
Web Components, PDF, XML/MHTML and very limited Excel output.
Without OfficeWriter, Reporting Services can not deliver reports in Microsoft
Word format. OfficeWriter-rendered documents preserve all of the Word features
contained in the user’s existing Word template.
"This is a huge leap in functionality for Reporting Services,” said SoftArtisans
CEO David Wihl. “Not only does OfficeWriter enhance Reporting Services' support
for MS Office - it more importantly empowers end users to design and manage
reports in familiar MS Office. No new training, no new client-side requirements
and full preservation of all MS Office features - a winning combination."
Through a toolbar integrated within Excel and Word, it’s easy to access a data
source and insert data/text through merge fields and repeat blocks. After designing
the report, the toolbar is used to save, preview, edit and publish reports to
the Reporting Services server for distribution. Thanks to this freely-distributed
client-side design tool, there is no need to switch from Microsoft Office to
the browser to generate reports.
The Reporting Services Edition of OfficeWriter is packaged with the Enterprise
Edition of OfficeWriter v2.5 or sold separately. There are no per-user costs
with OfficeWriter. It is licensed per server CPU.

BROOKLINE, MA October 11, 2004 - SoftArtisans has released OfficeWriter v2.5
which includes a SQL Server Reporting Services Edition, image insertion in Microsoft
Word and complete pivot table support in Excel.

SoftArtisans OfficeWriter Will Provide
Real Excel, Word Reports in Microsoft Reporting Services
Integration to be Completed in Q3 2004
BROOKLINE, MA February 12, 2004 - SoftArtisans has announced that they will
provide native Excel and Word reporting for Microsoft’s recently released SQL
Server Reporting Services through a full integration of their popular OfficeWriter
product.
The integration, which will be completed in third quarter 2004, will please
countless Microsoft customers who need to generate real, native binary Excel
and Word files that preserve all the richness of both formats. Reporting Services
currently supports only Microsoft Office Web Components, PDF and XML/MHTML output.
Reporting Services does not support Word whatsoever.
“Reporting Services Version 1 has a great architecture. With OfficeWriter,
customers will be able preserve their existing Excel and Word documents, use
Office as a designer instead of Visual Studio. NET and still take advantage
of all of the rich report management of Reporting Services,” said SoftArtisans
President David Wihl. “It’s a win-win-win for SoftArtisans, Microsoft and most
importantly, our mutual customers. No other reporting solution will have this
capability.”
An enterprise reporting product available for ASP, ASP.NET and J2EE™,
OfficeWriter is currently used by 8 of the Fortune 10 and capable of delivering
over 100,000 editable Excel and Word reports per hour over the Web. The newest
version of OfficeWriter is expected to be released in March.
In addition to real Word and Excel 97-2003 report generation, OfficeWriter’s
integration will provide Microsoft customers with an easy-to-use report design
tool as well as the ability to update databases with live data. Both features
are not included in the initial release of Reporting Services.
The first version of Reporting Services requires either Visual Studio .NET
or a third party tool to design reports. OfficeWriter’s integration with Reporting
Services will allow organizations to avoid additional design tools and preserve
their large investments in Excel and Word.
“Some customers have spent years building sophisticated models and VBA and
want to preserve that investment rather than starting with a new design tool,”
said Wihl. “Power users in Excel and Word don't want to spend time training
with another tool when they know and can already use Excel and Word.”
SoftArtisans’ HotCell Technology provides a live connect back to the source
data directly from Excel and Word, allowing users to access a centralized location
for up-to-the minute business information. Currently within the Reporting Services
infrastructure there is no way for a user to reconnect and send updates back
to the database.
